The West Midlands can’t get enough of north Indian dance at the moment. Following Balbir Singh Dance Company coming to DanceXchange last week, now Sampad, the South Asian arts company, have told us about an exciting performance North Winds which will see two proficients in traditional north Indian music and dance come together on stage.
On Wednesday 25 November, Sanchita Pal and Gauri Sharma Tripathi will come together to perform on stage at Solihull Arts Complex, drawing on years of training in north Indian traditions.
Gauri Sharma Tripathi is currently Artist in Residence at Southbank Centre in London, and she has made kathak dance accessible to the world, choreographing for the likes of Kylie Monogue, Akram Khan and Elton John. She was trained by her mother Padma Sharma, and in giving the traditional dance style a contemporary slant has exposed it to new environments. She will perform a solo piece which draws on other productions by her company Kireet, followed by a duet from her dancers Payal and Seema Patel.
Music will come from Sanchita Pal - a classical vocalist who has collaborated with dance artists from a range of styles and learns the art form under the guidance of Ajoy Chakrabarty.
North Winds: A night of music and dance by Sanchita Pal and Gauri Sharma Tripathi will be performed at Solihull Arts Complex on Wednesday 25 November at 7.30pm. Tickets are £10 (£6 concs) and can be purchased by calling 0121 704 6962 or visiting solihull.gov.uk/arts or www.sampad.org.uk.
