Happy Birthday West Midlands Dance

by hrwaldram on October 28, 2009

It’s been one year since we started West Midlands Dance – and how we have seen the site grow!

We’ve done a round-up of the best bits and bobs from the site in the last year – with special thanks to people who have contributed to the site and nurtured its growth – including Fiona Handscomb, Nicky Getgood, Frankie Ward, and Amy Martin.

To start with we picked out the best crop of dance news and performances going on in and around Birmingham – highlighting reviews in the local and national newspapers. In January 2009 we started producing our own reviews, highlighting dance jobs in the region, and current classes across the West Midlands.

When People Dancing knocked on our doors in February 2009 we were eager to keenly follow the developments of the programme – and this autumn we have already started to see the fruits of successful proposals such as the Boys Dancing half term project running this week – Babel. More reviews, events, news and features followed and we began to seek out the lesser known companies and dance projects taking place across the board of the Midlands dance scene.

Soon we were being inundated with emails from you, our readers, with your dance news, events and requests to populate our pages. Recently we’ve been able to expand our range of interviews, reviews and features and – one year on – there is nowhere else on the web where you can find such extensive, engaging and honest dance news and features for the West Midlands region.

With the up and coming festivals British Dance Edition 2010 and International Dance Festival Birmingham, hitting our region in the next few months- we’re positive the next year has even more innovative, eye-popping and ground-breaking local dance to fill our pages. What with U.Dance from Youth Dance England and the People Dancing programme as part of the 2012 Cultural Olympiad – it is quite possible the next year will see us all taking part in a non-stop dance party. We’ve also now got a Facebook page and group – a great place for you to talk to us directly and discuss dance related issues among yourselves. Look out for a new look West Midlands Dance coming soon, and an area for you to upload information about your dance classes, and -as always – keep us updated on your news and comments.
