The world premiere of a brand new piece of music theatre is coming to Birmingham. Rumpelstitskin is presented by the Birmingham Contemporary Music Group (BCMG) – and promises to be an evening of elementary original choreography.

Directed by Richard Jones and an exquisite set of reclaimed objects by Stuart Laing, work will be performed at the CBSO Centre on Saturday 14 November at 6pm (£8) and 8pm for (£12). Although it sounds like a classical music evening, six dancers will be performing contemporary dance alongside the music, unravelling the haunting tale of Rumpelstiltskin.

Written and composed by David Sawer for the BCMG, it’s a tale of greed and abuse, based on the famous fairytale…

A miller boasts to the king that his daughter can spin straw into gold. Three times the king demands she does so, promising marriage. If she fails her life is forfeit. Three times she despairs until Rumpelstiltskin appears, spinning straw into gold in exchange for a gift. The third time the girl promises her first-born child to Rumpelstiltskin, should she be queen. A year later, the new queen bears a child and Rumpelstiltskin arrives for his fee. He will only relent if within three days the queen can guess his name…

Sawer has previously created two full-length operas, chamber works and music for theatre. While Laing and have directed and produced work for a number of prestigious theatre companies and the West End.

This is the first performance before the group go on tour, where they will travel to Glasgow and London among other venues.
